I write this post from Dubai airport. We are officially 'almost there'! All twelve of us are enormously excited. We meet the rest of the challenge participants once we arrive in Dar Es Salaam - fingers crossed ;). At this point in time we can all be found in various stages of the wake up process, walking aimlessly through what can only be described as a rather sterilised and expensive airport (couple this with the fact that water to half the terminal has been shut off and you have quite the scene!).
After checking in at Auckland airport, earlier yesterday, we all congregated in the infamous Jean Batten cafe, exchanging looks infused with anticipation, disbelief and yes a small dose of 'what the hell have we signed up for?' Of course the collective enthusiasm of the group trumps any fear or anxiety - by a long shot. In fact we could be compared to children on Christmas Eve.
The team gets along fantastically (although I shall be sure to update you on that when we are sleep deprived, on the brink of altitude sickness and in need of showers). We are a varied bunch - in terms of home town, profession etc however once again I am loving being in the company of such lovely people who are avid World Vision fans. Already I have been a part of half a dozen development related discussions with participants - and the challenge has barely begun! It is humbling to speak to several who have been long-time sponsors and are visiting a World Vision community for the first time. Several participants have supported World Vision via multiple sponsorships over an extended time (20+ years). That is amazing to me and so incredibly humbling.
Okay must run. I am absolutely freezing and in need of chocolate.
